What to do when a daily check-in is missed
6 min read · Home for Life Companion — reviewed July 2026
Most missed check-ins are not emergencies. Before you call 911, work through a short decision sequence. That sequence helps you respond calmly, avoids creating anxiety for your parent, and gets you the right information before you escalate.
Common non-emergency reasons
- Slept in after a poor night or early appointment the day before
- Phone left charging in another room
- Notification dismissed by accident
- Had a visitor or phone call and got distracted
- Brief internet outage
Decision framework
- Wait 20–30 minutes past the expected check-in time before doing anything
- Call or text your parent directly — this resolves most cases
- No answer after two attempts? Try a neighbor or local contact
- Still no contact after an hour? Call non-emergency police for a wellness check
- Genuine concern of immediate danger? Call 911 directly
Important: Home for Life Companion is not an emergency service. A missed check-in notification is a prompt for you to follow up. If your parent is in immediate danger, call 911.
